It was another beautiful day in the Himalayas today. We’ve made lot’s of progress since the last post and tonight we are in the village of Namche Bazaar, the hub of the Khumbu region. Yesterday morning we left Kathmandu by plane and helicopter and landed in Lukla where the trekking began. The team was excited to get out of the city and into the mountains we travelled so far to enjoy! After our flights, and a bit of time in Lukla to organize porter loads and drink some tea, we began the trek up the valley to the village of Phakding where we spent the night. We woke this morning down by the Dudh Khosi river at a peaceful lodge where we’d spent the night. After an early breakfast, we hit the trail to get a start on one of the longer trekking days of our journey to Everest Base Camp. The trail follows the river valley up through some small villages before climbing up to the bustling village of Namche Bazaar, the hub of the upper Khumbu region. After about 5-6 hours of hiking, we arrived in Namche and hit the bakery for apple strudel, chocolate cake and coffee before settling into the lodge. Everyone is doing great tonight, although there are some tired legs and several folks are feeling the effects of the 11,300 ft altitude. Tomorrow we’ll hike around Namche and spend another night here, so we will enjoy a relatively leisurely day and give everyone a chance to adjust to this altitude before moving up higher.
