The San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado are home to some of the most inspiring and classic ice climbing routes in the US. Whether you are new to the sport and seeking instruction or a seasoned alpinist, we’d love to help you experience the beautiful ice surrounding Telluride and Ouray.
Park Ice Climbing
Join Mountain Trip, the only AMGA Certified Guide Service in southwestern Colorado, for a day of ice climbing around Telluride or Ouray. Ice climbing in this area is an unmatched alpine pursuit and a spectacular experience for first-timers and seasoned climbers alike.
Mountain Trip is permitted to guide in the world-famous Ouray Ice Park. Just under a mile from downtown Ouray, the ice park is a unique venue with over 200 man-made ice routes located in the stunning Uncompahgre Gorge. Most routes are less than a 15-minute walk from the park entrance. Routes are created by water pipes above the gorge, which keeps them in near-perfect condition throughout the winter season. The park even features a beginner’s section accessible to children, which makes it an ideal outing for the whole family.
Known as “Little Switzerland,” Ouray is both a Mecca for ice climbing and is well known for its many hot springs. Its easy access both to routes of all grades in the Ice Park and to hot springs to relax in make Ouray one of the best places in the world to learn how to ice climb.
Backcountry Ice Climbing
Mountain Trip holds US Forest Service Permits to guide backcountry ice routes outside of Ouray, Silverton, and Telluride, where we have access to alpine climbing routes that range anywhere from intermediate to expert, and from 100’ to 1,200 feet long.
We provide instruction in the latest techniques that will help you push yourself and improve as a climber. We can also accompany you on high, challenging routes you’ve been dying to get on. Emphasis on efficiency and how to organize your systems will help you build a foundation, which will help prepare you for your next big route and help you have more fun.
Mountain Trip will provide all the necessary technical climbing equipment to all climbers, unless you would prefer to use your own. We make sure that all equipment that we provide to our climbers is top-of-the-line and the most recent technology available.
