Backcountry Skiing

The opportunities for steep, aesthetic couloirs, low-angle powder-filled glades, and beautiful high alpine bowls near Telluride and Ouray are endless. Mountain Trip offers an array of backcountry skiing and splitboarding trips, including Intro to Backcountry Skiing, Guided Backcountry Skiing, Sidecountry Skiing and Backcountry Ski Hut Trips. Regardless of your ability or skill level, we can take you from a fun instructional day to staring down the hardest lines in the San Juan Mountains.

We are permitted to guide many excellent zones in the Telluride backcountry as well as Red Mountain Pass. Whether you want to simply avoid the crowds of the resort, hit some untouched powder, or have been progressing towards a dreamy technical descent, there’s no shortage of incredible terrain that will keep any skier or rider busy for the length of the winter season.

Mountain Trip is the only guiding service in Telluride accredited by the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA), with an experienced team of local ski guides who are highly trained avalanche professionals familiar with the local snowpack.

Avalanche gear (beacon, shovel and probe) is included with all trips. Should you need equipment, we have plenty of rental gear available, including alpine touring skis, boots, skins and poles; however, we strongly suggest bringing and practicing with your own backcountry kit. All of our equipment is top-of-the-line gear we have used and trust.

If you have questions or are unsure of where to start in your backcountry progression, please contact the Mountain Trip office at [email protected] or (970) 369-1153.
