Lead guide Rob “Durny” Durnell called in from the team’s new home– the beautiful basin camp at 11,200 feet. It sounded like the team had a tough go of it today, moving up through whiteout conditions, navigating by GPS and the occasional wand that they could see from their carry up through this stretch of glacier yesterday. It’s snowing hard, and they worked hard to reach camp, earning every vertical foot of the 3400 feet of gain.
The team will spend several nights at this camp, perhaps more, if the weather doesn’t cooperate. Hopefully, they will have some break in the whiteout, so they can see the view from this camp, which looks out over the heavily glaciated peak known as Kahiltna Dome and over the tundra that stretches to the horizon beyond it.
Here is Durny!
