Our guide Ted Grosgebauer called in from the stunningly beautiful camp at 11,200′. The team pushed up from 7,800′ camp with moderate snow falling, but climbed above the snow cloud and arrived in camp in good style.
I spoke with Laura Duncan earlier and she said that the weather at 7,800′ was looking pretty bad, with snow falling and low visibility. She described the lead guide Jacob Schmitz’s decision to move as a “Jedi mind trick,” because he seemed to sense that they would climb up and out of the storm, which they did!
She said that everyone did great and that they made good time on this move. Guides pay close attention to how long it takes a team or a climber to move from one point to another, because their demonstration of ability helps inform our decision making on the upper mountain. Making good time down low tells a guide that the climbers might be able to push hard up high, which could help open up additional options in the guide’s decision making matrix. In a nutshell the team is going great and seems strong, skilled and motivated!
