May 17 Team – Back Carry from Camp 2 Complete

It’s a great day for climber Mike and the May 17 Team! Their “back carry” day is complete. This active rest day takes climbers from their new home of Camp 2 at 11,000 ft (3353 m) back down the route with light packs and sleds to their gear cache at 10,200 ft (3109 m) While serving as an active rest day this also allows our crew to dig up the gear they stashed a few days ago so that they are hauling half the weight on their climb days while keeping extra gear nearby for when they are able to retrieve it.

They will be applying this technique all the way up the route. From what we hear the camp kitchen was particularly delicious today offering hashbrowns for breakfast, quesadillas for a nice hot lunch, and carnitas burritos for dinner! The team dove into practicing their technical skills with crampons and ice axes that will allow them to complete tomorrow’s objective: carrying gear to the cache site above Windy Corner 13,000 ft (3962 m) which is likely icy this time of year. We can’t wait to hear how it goes!

  1. Thanks for the update Mike!
Doggies, Mom & Dad, my family and I all say hi back and we love you.
Still getting some snow play in here. We were up on the Mesa today on XC skis no sign of melting off any time soon.
    Love,
    Jen
