Mary calls in from Camp 2 last night to report the team took their first “active rest day”. They traveled back down to their cache site at 10,200′ (3108m) to retrieve their gear and bring it back up to Camp 2. This only takes a few hours, and the team was able to spend the rest of the day reviewing snow skills that they will start to employ as they climb higher on the mountain. They practiced yesterday with using their crampons, as well as their ice ax. Tomorrow the team plans to cache at Windy Corner at 13,200′ (4023m) in preparation for moving to Camp 3, which resides at 14,200′ (4328m). Leaving Camp 2, the team will start to experience more varied and challenging terrain. Starting their day first with Motorcycle Hill followed by Squirrel Hill, across the “Polo Field” (a flat expanse of the glacier) to Windy Corner. They topped the day off with a delicious dinner of fish tacos!
Mary here!
