Lead guide Jason Denley reports the team has successfully moved to Camp 3 at 14,200′ (4328m). The team is moving strong and doing a great job as they climb North America’s highest peak. Getting to Camp 3 is always pretty exciting. As you leave Camp 2, the terrain starts to get more challenging, the views are incredible, and arriving at Camp 3 there is often a great atmosphere of excitement as many teams park themselves there to line up for their summit attempt. Typically, you want to wait at Camp 3 for a nice weather window before moving up to High Camp, as conditions up there are rather inhospitable and you don’t want to have to stay too long. Teams can start to practice the skills they need for the next part of their climb here while the acclimatize to the higher altitude.
The team started their day ascending first Motorcycle Hill, then Squirrel Hill (no, to our knowledge, there has never been a squirrel on Denali!), they then cross a part of the glacier that gentle slopes uphill called the Polo Field. From here there is one more hill to ascend to Windy Corner at 13,000′ (3962m), round this and down a small slope and back up into Camp 3!
Here’s a fabulous view from above looking down on Camp 3, taken by a 2021 team.
