Congrats to the May 13th West Buttress Denali Expedition for making the move from Camp 1 to Camp 2 and spending their first night at 11,000′!
Expedition team member Alex called in with a quick update.
It sounds like they are now living above the clouds! There is a really cool phenomena on Denali where clouds and stormy weather tend to get “stuck” around Kahiltna Pass, in the area between Camp 1 and Camp 2. As the climbers turn right to head east up towards Camp 2 from the flats near Kahiltna Pass, they often emerge from the soupy cloud bank and find the weather quite pleasant at Camp 2. It’s amazing that 1,000′ of elevation can make the difference between being in a total whiteout versus being above the clouds under blue skies!
Welcome to Camp 2, May 13th Team!
