June 18 West Buttress Expedition – Cache Day

Yesterday the team had their first cache day of the expedition. This is expedition style climbing, which allows climbers to climb high and sleep low aiding in altitude acclimatization. They chose some items they won’t need for a few days, like snacks and meals, and carried them most of the way to Camp 2. They then dig a deep hole in the glacier and bury their supplies. This cache is marked by wands and a waypoint on their GPS. Caches have to be buried in case of Denali Ravens which love to raid climbers caches. After caching its light loads and a quick descent back to camp. They’ll retrieve their cache the day after they move to Camp 2. They should be moving up to Camp 2 today!
