Denali Quick Ascent
Our Quick Ascent expedition is for climbers who are very fit and have significant mountaineering experience and want the opportunity to go with a smaller, uniquely strong team of climbers. All team members are required to pre-acclimatize either by spending sufficient time in a hypobaric tent (ie. Hypoxico) or by doing another high-altitude trip immediately prior to the climb. Our guides will be pre-acclimatized from a previous Denali expedition and we will cache some equipment/supplies at the upper camps to allow team members to move a bit lighter on the lower mountain. We still allow for seven weather days, which is why the overall maximum length of the trip is only 2 days less than the standard itinerary.
This program will allow the acclimatized team the opportunity to more quickly ascend the mountain, but it is not a guarantee that you’ll be able to go faster. Ultimately, the weather and mountain conditions will dictate your schedule, but we have had success with this program. Our 2024 Quick Ascent teams were able to summit and fly off the mountain in 10 days, so when the weather cooperates and the team is strong, it works.
Our Quick Ascent program is definitely not for everyone and it is not necessarily an easier way to climb the mountain. In fact, it’s arguably more strenuous and we have a higher expectation of fitness and movement skills for Quick Ascent team members. However, this program can be a great option for some climbers.
The additional cost reflects the smaller team size (a maximum of 4 climbers with 2 guides), as well as the additional commitments we make to have the guide pre-acclimatized and to have some food and fuel stocked at the upper camps.
Expectations
Climbers interested in the Quick Ascent should be experienced at high-altitude mountaineering. This is probably not an appropriate option for a climber going to altitude for the first time.
We expect each team member to be very proficient at the basic movement skills required to climb the West Buttress on Denali. Our guides will coach and model, but this is not the trip on which to learn how to use crampons efficiently.
Climbers need to be fit enough to move with limited rest days and able to carry loads of up to 90 lbs (between pack and sled) on the lower glacier, and pack loads of up to 55 lbs on the upper mountain. We do not plan to take as many rest days on this program as we would on a traditional West Buttress expedition.
Climbers also need to be acclimatized to 17,000 feet prior to arriving in Alaska. This is typically accomplished by using a Hypoxico or similar hypobaric tent, or coming right off of a Mount Everest expedition. Hypoxic Conditioning Coaching is available through Uphill Athlete. We highly recommend their fitness training program and conditioning coaching for anyone joining a Quick Ascent team.
