Day by day ice climbing season inches closer and closer, and we’re fired up to get out!

It’s still early, but thanks to a few solid snow storms and cold temps, we’re seeing the ice coming in nicely, and we plan to be guiding routes very soon.

Whether you’re new to bashing ice, are looking to hop on some classic backcountry multi-pitch routes, or want to step into the world-famous @ourayicepark this winter, we’ve got options for everyone and some of the best ice around in Ouray, Silverton, and Telluride.

We’re only six months out from landing on the Ka

We’re only six months out from landing on the Kahiltna Glacier for the 2025 Denali season, and the time to prep is now!

We’ve still got space on several teams for our open West Buttress expeditions, as well as spots on our June 7 Quick Ascent expedition. Our June 17 West Buttress expedition will be a Ski Approach trip, for those who’d rather travel on skis as opposed to snowshoes.

Beyond open team trips, we also specialize in custom private expeditions. Since we started guiding Denali back in 1976, we have successfully guided more private groups to the summit than any other guide service.

When preparing, we use and trust the great folks at @uphill_athlete. Their coaches are experienced climbers and mountain athletes, and can help take the mystery out of training for expedition climbing. Mountain Trip Alaska provides our climbers with a six-month mountaineering training plan, and they have changed the way we train for expeditions!

🎿 SKI REPORT!!! ⛷️

Folks in the San Juans have been getting great early season powder turns thanks to early snowstorms that have produced up high. One of whom is @madcrowell, one of our top backcountry ski guides. When we say she LIVES for skiing, we’re not kidding.

Here’s her report:

“The skiing has been pretty fantastic. Skiers started poking around our local zones about 10 days ago, and even earlier in the Silverton and RMP areas. All of the SNOTEL SWE sites are showing 200-300% above average. In the alpine we have between 80-120 cm of snow. Below treeline the skiing varies and exits for a lot of the ski areas can still be thin. However, last week brought a lot of deep powder skiing above 11,000 feet.

Winter is off to a good start and if we can keep this trend going it will line us out for a really good season. This is the best early November skiing in the last five years!”

Needless to say, psych is high! Still, low to moderate avalanche hazard exists around the San Juans, so always be heads up and make good decisions when planning tours and heading into the backcountry.

Scholarship applications for the Peter Inglis Aval

Scholarship applications for the Peter Inglis Avalanche Education Fund (PI Fund) are now open for the 2024-24 winter season!

Available for locals who live in San Miguel and nearby counties, the fund offers financial assistance for those looking to further their avalanche education, and memorializes our good friend and former guide, Peter.

We’ll be offering recreational Rescue, Level 1, and Level 2 courses throughout the season, so apply, register for one of our courses, and be prepared when stepping into the backcountry this winter.

🚨 BIG 7 SUMMITS NEWS!!! 🚨 Carstensz Pyramid is open for the first time since 2019!

Due to political unrest in West Papua, Indonesia, the mountain has remained inaccessible. Finally, after a long five-year wait, things have settled down and we’ve got trip dates on the calendar:

• Feb. 24-March 6, 2025
• March 9-19, 2025
• Aug. 4-14, 2025
• Oct. 20-30, 2025
• (More dates will be posted soon!)

Regarded as the most elusive of the 7 Summits and the highest peak in the Oceania continent, Carstensz is located on the equatorial island of Papua in a remote and stunning corner of Indonesia.

The island of Papua is one of the most exotic and fascinating places left in the world, no more evidenced than by the Dani tribe, who for a long time were one of the most isolated people in the world. Beyond that, between the 5th class climbing on beautiful limestone, stop throughs in Bali, and summit views looking out over the jungle towards the blue Pacific Ocean, climbing this mysterious mountain is a very special experience!

We have lead 16 expeditions (all summited) on Carstensz Pyramid, and we’re excited to get back to West Papua!

Snow has started fly in the San Juans! Winter is just around the bend, but first we want to acknowledge the outstanding summer season that seemed to just cruise on by ☀️

Thanks to all of our excellent guides for all of their hard work! Ya’ll are some of the best in the biz and Mountain Trip wouldn’t be the family that it is without every one of you. And most of all, thanks to everyone who joined us on a trip! It’s an amazing and special thing to meet so many different people from all of walks of life, and to help them realize their goals in the mountains. Climbing season in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison is under way! 🧗

In recent days guide @jesse_m_yon took a few trips into the Black, two linking up Maiden Voyage and King Me, followed by Cloaked Interpretation.

Maiden Voyage to King Me climbs at 5.9 to 5.10- and is an excellent intro to the Black, while Cloaked Interpretation is perfect for a solid 5.10 climber looking to go pitch after pitch of classic crack climbing on a unique feature.

Both routes are getting morning shade and are also comfortable in the early afternoon. As fall progresses and temps continue to drop, routes on North Chasm View Wall will continue to open up. Let’s go! 🧗‍♀️

Surprise! The psych and attendance at our @arcteryx Fall Climbing Clinics the past few weeks has been so amazing that we’re adding one more! The next and final (for real this time) clinic will take place at the Ophir Wall in Ophir, CO on Oct. 8, 2024 from 4-8 p.m. or until it gets dark.

Clinics are FREE and open climbing sessions for our local Telluride and Ouray communities to meet new climbing partners, sample local venues, and ask questions in a relaxed, supportive environment. Lead by experienced rock climbing guides, we’ll set up top-ropes and supervise, answer questions, go over technical systems and provide movement instruction.

We recommend registering online (again, it’s free!) at the link in our bio (directions will be provided in the confirmation email). You are also welcome to just show up if you can’t make it at 4 p.m. Either way, we’ll kindly need you to sign a digital or paper waiver to participate.

Required gear: Rock climbing shoes, harness and helmet, as well as a belay device and chalk bag. Participants are welcome to bring any other personal kit they would like to use, and should have a small background in climbing, including top-rope belay, tying a figure 8 knot, and owning their own basic gear (Mountain Trip WILL NOT provide personal climbing equipment).

It’s an excellent time to get up into the alpine

It’s an excellent time to get up into the alpine and on top of big peaks, and while 14ers like Sneffels, Wilson Peak, Mount Wilson and El Diente are often attractive objectives, some of the lesser-known peaks, like Fowler Peak in the Wilson Group, are worthy all on their own.

There are fewer and fewer truly wild places on Ear

There are fewer and fewer truly wild places on Earth, and Mount Vinson in Antarctica is one of them! ❄️

At 16,050’ (4,892 meters), a Mount Vinson climb is often described as a “mini-Denali” expedition, and requires basic mountaineering skills and the ability to deal in the extreme cold temperatures of Antarctica.

Our team meets at the southern tip of Chile in the bustling port town of Punta Arenas. Flying to Antarctica and landing on the blue ice runway at Union Glacier is an experience you will never forget. From the Union Glacier we board a Twin Otter on skis for the flight to Vinson Base Camp.

It takes an impressive amount of logistical support to get people and gear to the bottom of the world, but we’re here to make it happen!
