Jacqueline Heller called in a nice update from Camp 1, located at 7,800′ on the broad Kahiltna Glacier. It sounds like they had a great day, hiking up glacier in the shade that constitutes nighttime on Denali just two days before the summer solstice.
They departed at about 1 am, and hiked down the Southeast Fork to meet the main body of the Kahiltna. Turning right, they hiked north for several miles until they reached a fairly flat section at the base of a 1500′ hill on the glacier. The bottoms of hills tend to cause the ice to compress, reducing the likelihood of big, tent eating crevasses.
Here’s Jacqueline!
