May 22 West Buttress Team resting at Camp 3

Climber Tim Spencer called in a report for the Mountain Trip May 22 Denali West Buttress Expedition, who took a much-needed rest day at Camp 3 after officially spending one week on the route. The spent the day refueling with good food, shoveling out their tents, catching up on reading, and getting to know the others on their team. There’s a special kind of camaraderie fostered by spending a lot of downtime snowed in camp with other climbers!

Tim mentioned the high amounts of snow that accumulated around 11,000′, somewhere between two and three feet of snow, which drifted even higher than that with the winds.

Tomorrow they plan to cache gear and food around Windy Corner, if the weather clears up as the forecast suggests.

  1. So curious about the reading material you chose … trust the weather is clearing and you are well on your way to windy gap as I type this — thinking of you constantly!

  2. Scott good thing you had a chance to experience some snow is Boston before this adventure…lol. Prayers are with you guys.

  3. Thanks for the report, Tim!! Hope the weather clears for you!! We are praying for your entire team!! Thanks for the shout-out!!

  4. Hello Tim,

Aunt Michelle LOVES you! Please be safe. Thinking of you and sending prayers and warm (!) wishes every day. Your enormously huge puffy jacket from Buenos Aires would have been useful at this point. ; )

    Take care!

    Love,

    Aunt Michelle

  5. Wheelers, I’m enjoying following your progress. Sounds pretty challenging — and cold! Proud of you. Stay strong.

  6. Shout out to the Wheeler team from the Souders- great progress everyone! Also Happy Birthday Abe and Jake!!!! Love Robin and Blair

  7. Wow, Tim! You sound great. Maybe your next career should be a radio broadcaster. Glad the whole team got a chance to rest and recuperate. It was 50s and rainy here in Vermont today, and I thought that was cold. Good luck to you all and thanks for the update!

  8. Hi Tim!

    Miss you,
    Denice
