May 9 Denali Team – Happy Mother’s Day

Karl Welter and Simen Haare called in a nice report, four days into their climb.  They have had some deep snow to contend with in the past days, and today they broke trail through a meter of new snow to retrieve their cache from below Camp 2.

Today was what we call a “backcarry day.”  They dropped downhill from their 11,200′ Camp 2 and dug through the new snow and eventually into the pit where they had buried their cache a couple days earlier.  Typically, a backcarry day is pretty mellow, with a short, 20-30 minute stroll downhill, some digging and an hour or so worth of hiking back to camp.  With the new snow, today felt a bit more like work!
