May 18th West Buttress Team — Skills training at Camp 14,200′

Matt and Cameron call in from Camp 14,200′. After picking up their cache lower on the mountain, the team spent the day practicing specific skills for higher up on the mountain. The fixed lines live above their camp with 800ft of steep snow climbing protected by fixed ropes where you attach yourself with an ascending device, a jumar, that automatically tightens when weight is applied and relaxes as it moves. Weather and winds are forecasted to approach their camp so the evening was spent building walls around their tents to provide some comfort from the elements. Stay tuned for when the team can make their way up to the 16,000′ ridge!
