Aconcagua is the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere at nearly 7000 meters (6,962 meters/22,841 ft) and can be climbed without being an experienced mountaineer. It is an amazing place to get high altitude expedition experience on non-technical terrain, and a beautiful climb and experience. This is a peak that we recommend for anyone who is interested in getting into high altitude climbing as it is one of the few places in the world where you can go to 7000 meters without technical climbing skills.
Training for Aconcagua
To climb Aconcagua, you do need to be a fit hiker, which is where a solid training plan comes in. We’ve been working with Steve House at Uphill Athlete for several years now and have seen great results in the climbers who have used their program. Check out their 24 week Mountaineering Plan. Being strong and fit for these trips isn’t rocket science, but it does require time and a solid training plan will help you use your limited training time to the best advantage.
Our Aconcagua expedition meets in the beautiful city of Mendoza, Argentina which is in the heart of Argentine wine country. Spend a couple of extra days after the climb and explore the wineries and ranch lands around Mendoza!
