The May 28th Mountain Trip Denali West Buttress team is heading up the mountain!
The team flew in on Thursday to basecamp on the Kahiltna Glacier with all of their equipment, food, and supplies for a 20+ day expedition into the Alaska Range. They flew in just as a pretty good storm was approaching, so day 1 was spent in basecamp preparing for the climb. They woke up today to more reasonable weather and got a super early start out of basecamp and up to Camp 1.
The loads that climbers carry are the biggest on this first day and will get smaller as they eat their food and burn the fuel on the way up the mountain. This morning they set off with nearly 100lbs of supplies each spread between their backpacks and the sleds that they drag behind them. It is a lot of work climbing a big, remote, arctic mountain…
It sounds like the team is doing well and here is Berko checking in from Camp 1 with the evening expedition dispatch!
