The May 28 team is tucked in at Camp 1 (7,800 ft / 2,377 m) after a smooth day on the lower Kahiltna Glacier. Everyone is healthy, in good spirits, and full after a cozy, homemade camp dinner. The tents are dug in, snow walls are up, and the team is resting well ahead of a big move.
If the forecast holds, the team plans to climb to Camp 2 at 11,000 ft (3,353 m) tomorrow. The route gains over 3,000 ft (915 m) as it weaves up the Kahiltna Glacier, including a steady climb known as Ski Hill. It’s a beautiful but physically demanding day, often done in roped travel with full sleds and packs. The team is excited for the challenge and eager to gain elevation.
