The May 28th team had an eventful day on the mountain, back-carrying their cache from Kahiltna Pass and finding themselves involved in helping a fellow climber along the way.
Around 10,400 feet during the back-carry, the team came across an injured skier on the route. The team quickly shifted into support mode, with one of the guides staying with the injured skier and reaching out to the National Park Service to coordinate a response. The other members of the team continued down the route to Camp 2 to keep the operation moving safely. Eventually, the NPS was able to assist with a helicopter evacuation, and the skier was flown off the mountain for further care.
Moments like this are part of life on Denali. The community of climbers and guides on the mountain looks out for one another, and stopping to help someone in need is just what you do up there. The team handled the situation calmly and professionally, did the right thing, and helped get the injured skier the care they needed.
With everyone now safely back at camp, the May 28th team is settled in at Camp 2, regrouping and looking ahead to what comes next. It was a long, demanding day in a different way than usual, and we’re proud of how the team handled themselves out there.
