May 28th Team – Rest day at Camp 1

The May 28th team was planning to make the move up to Camp 2 today, but conditions on the route kept them in place. Rather than push into weather that wasn’t cooperating, the team made the smart call to stay put and wait for a better window.

Move days higher up the route involve a lot of effort and exposure, and pushing into bad weather just to keep moving isn’t worth the risk. Holding off and waiting for a more favorable window is almost always the right call, and it’s the kind of decision that defines safe, smart climbing on Denali. The mountain will still be there tomorrow, and the team will be in a stronger position to make the move when conditions improve.

In the meantime, days like this give the team a chance to rest, eat well, hydrate, and continue acclimatizing. None of that work is glamorous, but it adds up, and the team will be better prepared for the climbing ahead because of it.

For now, the May 28th team is staying patient, staying ready, and keeping an eye on the forecast. We’ll have more to share once the next opportunity to move higher comes around.

Family and friends are encouraged to leave comments for their loved ones on this expedition. Please keep in mind that climbers will not be able to see posts or comments until they return to Talkeetna at the end of the expedition.
