The May 17th team back-carried their cache from the Windy Corner site today, completing another important piece of the expedition rhythm and bringing all their supplies safely up to 14 Camp.
Back-carry days serve a quiet but important role in any Denali climb. After caching higher up the route on a previous day, the team returns to retrieve those supplies and bring them up to their current camp. The loads are heavy on the way back, but the route is familiar ground at this point, and the work goes faster than it would on an unfamiliar push. By the end of the day, the team has consolidated their supplies, simplified their setup, and put themselves in a stronger position to keep moving up the mountain.
There’s also something to be said for the steady, repetitive rhythm of expedition-style climbing on Denali. Cache, back-carry, move, repeat. It’s not flashy, and it rarely makes for dramatic stories, but it’s the foundation of how every successful Denali climb gets done. Each trip up and down a section of the route builds familiarity with the terrain, conditions, and the team’s own pace, all of which pay off when the climbing gets harder higher up.
For now, the May 17th team is settled in at 14 Camp with another productive day behind them. The work is steady, the team is climbing well, and the next phase of the expedition is right around the corner.
