The May 14th team has officially come down off the mountain! After making it all the way to high camp at 17,200 feet, the team made the decision to call their trip and begin their descent. The team walked out of 14 Camp last night, traveling through the cold, stable hours of the night down the lower glacier. They arrived back at Basecamp early this morning and caught their flight back to Talkeetna this afternoon. The team is now safely back at the house, and tonight they’re gathering for a final team dinner together.

Decisions like this are some of the hardest parts of climbing a mountain like Denali, but they’re also some of the most important. The team weighed everything carefully, including how they were feeling, the conditions on the upper mountain, and what the path forward realistically looked like. They came to a collective decision that felt right for the group, and that’s what responsible climbing on a mountain like Denali is all about. Reading conditions honestly, listening to the team, and making the call that matches the day is what defines good mountaineering.

It’s worth pausing to recognize just how much this team accomplished. They navigated weather delays, worked their way through the lower mountain, pushed through Windy Corner, established themselves at 14 Camp, climbed the fixed lines and the ridge, and made it all the way to high camp at 17,200 feet. That is an enormous undertaking on any Denali expedition, and the experience they gained up there will stay with them for a long time to come.

Denali asks a lot of everyone who steps onto it, and the summit is never a given. The real measure of an expedition is the climbing itself, the resilience shown through long days and hard decisions, the trust built between teammates, and the experience of standing in one of the most spectacular places on the planet. By every one of those measures, the May 14th team had a successful and meaningful climb. They showed up, supported one another, made smart and thoughtful choices, and came home safe, which is always the most important outcome of all.

We’ll be sitting down with the team later this week to debrief, hear their stories, and celebrate everything they achieved up there. For now, we want to say how proud we are of this group. Congratulations to the May 14th team on a hard-earned and well-deserved expedition on Denali.

Family and friends are encouraged to leave comments for their loved ones on this expedition. Please keep in mind that climbers will not be able to see posts or comments until they return to Talkeetna at the end of the expedition.
