The team is having a great day on the mountain, despite a few Starlink connectivity issues making communication a little tricky. Today the team hiked about 5 miles to Shira 1 Camp, taking in some of the most striking scenery and dramatic landscape changes of the entire climb.
The day started deep in the jungle, with the team making their way up muddy trails for the first mile or so through the lush rainforest that blankets Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes. After about two miles, the team climbed out of the jungle and into some really cool sub-alpine vegetation, marking the first of the dramatic shifts in terrain that make a Kilimanjaro climb so unique.
From there, the trail climbed before descending about 500 feet into a valley, where the team crossed a couple of creeks before climbing up a long ridge into the moorlands. This zone is characterized by tall grasses and short, stubby bushes, a landscape unlike anything at the lower elevations and a clear sign that the team is steadily gaining ground up the mountain.
After about six hours of hiking, the team was rewarded with their first view of the upper mountain. It was a beautiful, huge, and awe-inspiring sight, with the summit finally coming into full view and feeling within reach. A gentle hike led the team down into camp to wrap up the day.
Everyone is doing well, spirits are high, and the team is really excited to have laid eyes on the mountain they came to climb. It’s the kind of day that reminds everyone why Kilimanjaro, with its incredible variety of climate zones and landscapes, is such a special place to climb.
