June 6th Team – Waiting to fly into Basecamp!

The June 6th team made the drive to Talkeetna this afternoon, ready to step off on their Denali expedition! Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t cooperating, and flights onto the glacier were grounded for the day. The team will be spending the night in Talkeetna and trying again first thing tomorrow morning.

Weather delays in Talkeetna are a familiar part of the Denali experience. The flight from Talkeetna to Basecamp covers about 45 miles in a small single-engine plane, and the airspace around Denali can shift quickly. The mountain is so massive that it creates its own weather patterns, and it’s not uncommon for Talkeetna to be sunny and clear while the glacier itself is socked in. The bush pilots who fly this route are some of the most skilled in the world, so when they call a delay, it’s a clear sign that conditions are genuinely tough.

The silver lining is that Talkeetna is a pretty good place to be stuck. The small Alaskan town at the literal end of the road has served as a launchpad for Alaska Range climbers for decades, with coffee shops, restaurants, and a steady stream of fellow climbers passing through. It’s a chance for the team to rest up, ease into expedition mode, and get a feel for the place that has welcomed Denali climbers for generations.

For now, the June 6th team is settled in Talkeetna for the night, keeping an eye on the forecast and hoping for clearer skies tomorrow. We’ll have more to share once the team gets airborne.

Family and friends are encouraged to leave comments for their loved ones on this expedition. Please keep in mind that climbers will not be able to see posts or comments until they return to Talkeetna at the end of the expedition.
