May 19th Team – Back carry day!

The May 19th team had a productive day on the mountain, back-carrying their cache to Camp 2 and bringing their supplies up to consolidate at camp. With those loads now in place, the team has everything they need together and is well-positioned to keep working their way up the route.

Back-carrying is a key part of the expedition-style rhythm on Denali. After caching supplies higher up the route on a previous day, the team returns to retrieve those loads and brings them up to their current camp. While the loads are heavy, the route is familiar ground the team has already traveled, which makes the day feel more manageable than a brand-new push. It’s also a chance for climbers to keep dialing in their rope team travel and build on the skills they’ve been refining since stepping onto the glacier.

This back-and-forth pattern of caching and back-carrying is the foundation of how teams safely move a mountain’s worth of gear up Denali. It can feel repetitive at times, but every trip strengthens the team’s familiarity with the route and steadily advances their supplies toward the upper mountain. With their gear now consolidated at Camp 2, the team is set up to look ahead to the next phase of the climb.

For now, the May 19th team is settled in at Camp 2 with another solid day behind them. Each day like this builds the foundation for what comes next, and the team is in a good spot as they continue working up the mountain.
