June 13 Denali – On The Glacier!

Lead guide Rob “Durny” Durnell called in from the Southeast Fork of the Talkeetna Glacier, the site of Denali Base Camp!

The team drove up to the small, end of the road town of Talkeetna, Alaska on the morning of June 14th, arriving first at the airstrip, where they unloaded their gear and supplies at the Talkeetna Air Taxi headquarters before heading to the Talkeetna Ranger Station to attend a mandatory orientation presented by the National Park Service.  All Denali climbers must attend this orientation, which presents many considerations that anyone considering an attempt on the mountain must understand.

After the NPS briefing, they shot back over to the airstrip, finalized their preparation,s and loaded the planes for the 40 minute flight to the glacier.

The plan is to spend tomorrow reviewing skills that the crew will need to employ as they move up the broad, main body of the Kahiltna Glacier.

Here’s Durny!
